“O Egypt urged Israel to comply with its legal obligations under the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and international humanitarian law,” the Cairo Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement today, after learning of the decision of the highest UN judicial authority.
In the note, Egypt demanded that Israel “implement all provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice, which are considered legally binding and enforceable”, including the immediate cessation of Israeli military operations and any other action in the Palestinian city of Rafah.
The ICJ today demanded that Israel “immediately stop its military offensive” in Rafah to prevent “the total or partial physical destruction” of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as a group protected by the Genocide Convention.
Egypt stressed that Israel bears full legal responsibility “for the deterioration of humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip as an occupying power”, and called on the Israeli Government to put an end to “its systematic policies against the Palestinian people of attacks, famine and siege, in violation all provisions of international law and international norms and humanitarian law”.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs considered that the ICJ’s decision is “consistent with the current tragic situation in the Gaza Strip” and with “the continued expansion of killings and destruction that has affected defenseless Palestinians” as a result of Israeli intervention in the context of the war between Tel Aviv forces and the Islamist group Hamas.
Cairo diplomacy also called on the UN Security Council and the international community to fulfill their legal responsibilities and take measures to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire and ensure the full flow of aid across the Gaza Strip.
In another reaction, Turkey also urged the UN Security Council today to “do its part” to force Israel to implement the ICJ decision.
“We hope that the decisions taken by the Court will be quickly implemented by Israel. To ensure this, we invite the UN Security Council to do its part,” Ankara’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release.
“No country in the world is above the law”, adds Ankara, commenting that it welcomes the decision taken by the UN court, which should increase international pressure in favor of a truce after more than seven months of war between Israel and Hamas.
The ICJ also ordered Israel to keep open the Rafah crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, which it closed after launching its ground operation against the Palestinian town in the south of the enclave in early May.
Turkey announced earlier this month that it would join South Africa’s legal action against Israel before the ICJ, which accuses Tel Aviv of genocide.
This process is still being analyzed, but the ICJ has meanwhile issued provisional orders for Israel to do everything in its power to prevent any act of genocide and allow humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip.
The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip was triggered by the Hamas attack on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023, which caused more than 1,100 deaths and placed around 250 people hostage, according to Israeli authorities.
In retaliation, Israel launched a large-scale offensive in the Palestinian enclave, which has already claimed the lives of more than 35,000 people, mostly civilians, and left the enclave in a serious humanitarian crisis, according to local authorities controlled by Hamas.
