“NThere are no American soldiers in the war in Ukraine (…) I am determined to keep it that way,” Biden said during his speech at the graduation of the US Military Academy at West Point, about 65 kilometers from New York City.
The US President told more than 1,000 graduating cadets that the country “will not turn away” from Ukraine and described US soldiers as “tireless workers” in supporting Kiev in its efforts to repel the Russian invasion.
“We stand and will continue to stand with Ukraine,” Biden said to applause from the crowd.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymir Zelensky, recently called on Western countries – such as the USA, France and the United Kingdom – to send military aid to attack the infrastructure used by the Russian army to attack Ukrainian territory.
On the other hand, the US President highlighted the “fundamental role” of US support for its allies around the world, including Israel and the Indo-Pacific.
In particular, he highlighted its importance in neutralizing the Iranian attacks against Israel in April, and its support for allies in the Indo-Pacific, in the face of China’s growing militarism in the region.
“Thanks to the United States Armed Forces, we are doing what only America can do as an indispensable nation, the only superpower in the world,” he said.
Without mentioning Donald Trump, Biden emphasized values that Democrats have said would be at risk if the Republican politician returned to the White House: freedom and equal rights.
Trump was the last President to speak at the West Point graduation ceremony in 2020.
