O NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reaffirmed at the final press conference of the B9 summit, which took place in Riga, that he hopes that at the NATO summit in Washington it will be possible to agree on a mission to coordinate military aid and provide training to Ukrainian soldiers.
“There are different views,” admitted the Norwegian, adding that he is confident that it will finally be possible to reach a decision on the matter, as well as with a view to a long-term financial commitment to Ukraine and to helping this country on its path to membership of NATO.
The group underlined its commitment to Ukraine’s “irreversible path” to NATO.
But the proposal to coordinate aid to Ukraine through a NATO mission has raised skepticism from some allies, while some analysts consider it a step to avoid the effects that a possible change of government in the United States in November could have.
The Riga meeting, in which, among other leaders, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics and Polish President Andrzej Duda participated, ended without a joint statement, which signals differences of opinion between the B9 countries, reported the Efe agency.
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev stressed to the Bulgarian agency BTA that there was no consensus on how to end the war in Ukraine, since, although everyone wants to restore the country’s territorial integrity, some are betting on winning the war against Russia and others believe that peace negotiations are the only realistic path forward.
Romania, Slovakia and Hungary only sent diplomatic representation to Riga and not to their heads of government.
The NATO Secretary General recalled that the countries of the Atlantic Alliance collectively provide 40 billion euros of support to Ukraine every year and called for maintaining this level “as long as necessary”.
Stoltenberg and Polish President Andrzej Duda also alluded to tensions on the border between Poland and Belarus, where they stated that “hybrid operations” are being carried out by Minsk to destabilize Europe.
The NATO official pointed out that the use of migrants for this purpose is part of a pattern that is repeated “across the alliance” and warned that Russia and Belarus are behind sabotage attempts, cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns against countries of NATO.
