UAn Israeli official said this Tuesday that Hamas rejected the ceasefire proposal presented by US President Joe Biden in a response sent to Jerusalem.
“Tonight, Israel received, through the mediator, Hamas’ response. In its response, Hamas rejected the hostage release proposal presented by President Biden.”he said, quoted by Reuters, on condition of anonymity.
The official also pointed out that the militia changed the main parameters of the proposal.
These statements came after the Palestinian Islamist movement said it had transmitted to Qatari and Egyptian mediators its response to the US-backed ceasefire proposal, which included some “repairs”.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad, a smaller group, said they were willing to “negotiate positively to reach an agreement”, while also stressing that their priority is to put a “total end” to the war.
Meanwhile, the Qatari and Egyptian Foreign Ministries indicated, in a joint statement, that they are analyzing the response and will continue their mediation efforts, together with the United States, “until an agreement is reached”.
It should be noted that the UN Security Council approved, on Monday, a resolution that welcomed the proposed ceasefire in Gaza announced by Joe Biden and called on Israel and Hamas to “fully implement its terms, without delay and without conditions”, in order to reach a ceasefire.
While Hamas applauded the decision, Israel warned that it did not intend to “engage in endless and meaningless negotiations.” However, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “reaffirmed his commitment” to a ceasefire.
