O Reuters Digital News Report 2024 is the 13th annual report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ) and the 10th to contain information about Portugal. In 2024, 47 news markets participated, including Portugal.
As a strategic partner, OberCom – Observatório da Comunicação collaborated with RISJ in the design of the questionnaire for Portugal, as well as in the analysis and final interpretation of the data.
“Trust in the news (40%) remained stable over the last year, but remains four points below that recorded at the height of the coronavirus pandemic”, says the study.
Finland continues to be the country with the highest levels of global trust (69%), “while Greece (23%) and Hungary (23%) record the lowest levels, in a context of concerns about political influence and undue corporate influence on the media”.
The Reuters DNR 2024 study “concludes that high standards, a transparent approach, lack of bias and fairness in terms of media representation are the four main factors influencing trust.”
The report also concludes that “the elections increased interest in news in some countries, including the United States (52%, 3 percentage points more than last year), but the general trend continues to be downward”.
For example, interest in news in Argentina “dropped from 77% in 2017 to 45% currently.”
In the United Kingdom (38%), “interest in news has almost halved since 2015.”
Furthermore, there has been a rise in “selective avoidance of news”, with around four in ten (39%) saying that they sometimes or often avoid the news – three percentage points more than the average last year -, “with more significant increases in Brazil, Spain, Germany and Finland”.
“Open comments suggest that intractable conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East may have had some impact,” according to the report.
News podcasting continues to be “a positive for publishers, attracting younger and well-educated audiences, but it is a minority activity overall.”
In a group of 20 countries, “just over a third (35%) access a podcast monthly, with 13% accessing a program related to news and current affairs. Many of the most popular podcasts are currently filmed and distributed across platforms video platforms like YouTube and TikTok.”
The survey was carried out in 47 markets: United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Mexico , Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa.
Fieldwork was carried out at the end of January/beginning of February.
