“C“We have coordinated our positions ahead of the NATO summit to be held next week in Washington”, where support for Ukraine will be one of the main topics, added the Ukrainian President, referring to the telephone conversation between the two leaders.

“I am grateful to Prime Minister Starmer for reaffirming the UK’s principled and unwavering support for Ukraine,” Volodymyr Zelensky wrote.

The UK has been a strong supporter of Kyiv since the start of the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022.

Keir Starmer assured US President Joe Biden of London’s “unwavering” support for Ukraine in the first phone exchange between the two men on Friday, hours after the inauguration.

“The leaders reaffirmed the strength of their commitment to Ukraine and the Prime Minister stressed that UK support for Ukraine is unwavering,” Starmer’s office said.

The two leaders “spoke of their shared loyalty to the special relationship between the UK and the US and their shared ambitions for greater economic growth,” the statement said.

The new British Prime Minister “looks forward to working closely together across the full range of this relationship, including on the Aukus alliance and ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

The United Kingdom, the United States and Australia have created a new military alliance called Aukus, which is seen as having as its main objective to counter China’s growing military power in the Asia-Pacific region.

Joe Biden had already congratulated Keir Starmer for leading the Labour Party to a landslide victory in the British general election.
