EIn a press conference at the end of the high-level meeting in the US capital, the Norwegian politician pointed to “financial commitment, more military aid, more security agreements and better interoperability” as “the basis for Ukraine to prevail” in its fight against Russian aggression.

The allied heads of state and government participated today in the NATO-Ukraine Council with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a session that concluded the summit.

“NATO allies agreed that as Ukraine pursues necessary reforms, we will support it on its irreversible path to membership,” Stoltenberg said, echoing the words used by the leaders in the summit’s final declaration, adopted on Wednesday.

Stoltenberg stressed that allies have provided Ukraine with “unprecedented support” since Russia began its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The NATO official acknowledged that Ukraine had experienced “a difficult winter and spring” due to delays in providing aid, which had consequences on the front line, and warned: “We cannot and will not allow this to happen again.”

At the summit, the allies decided to create a NATO command center in Germany to manage the sending of international donations of material to Ukraine, as well as the coordination of training missions for their military personnel in eastern countries of the Alliance.

Likewise, they decided to commit at least 40 billion euros next year to finance military aid to Kiev.

“We will review this level at upcoming summits to ensure that our support continues to meet Ukraine’s needs,” Stoltenberg noted.

This commitment, he said, will ensure that allies better distribute their military support efforts to Ukraine and will provide “reliable support to deter and defend against further Russian aggression now or in the future.”
