EHowever, the FBI today identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, the area where the failed attack took place.
The young man fired several shots at the stage where Trump was standing from an “elevated position outside the rally venue,” the FBI said, quoted by the Associated Press (AP) news agency.
The shots grazed the Republican candidate for the US presidential election in the ear and killed a man who was sitting in the audience behind Donald Trump.
However, the AP shows, through photographs and video, that the shooter was “surprisingly close to the stage where the former president was speaking,” less than 500 feet away, on the roof of a factory north of the Butler Farm Show grounds.
The AP notes that 150 meters is a distance from which a sniper could reasonably hit a human-sized target, as it is the distance at which US Army recruits must hit a human-sized silhouette to qualify in basic training.
President Joe Biden announced today that he has requested an independent review of what happened and instructed the Secret Service to re-examine all security measures for the Republican National Convention, which begins on Monday in Milwaukee.
FBI Special Agent Kevin Rojek said it was “surprising” that the gunman was able to fire a shot at the stage before being killed.
Members of the Secret Service’s counter-sniper team and counter-assault team were at the rally, according to two law enforcement officials.
The counter sniper team uses long-range binoculars and is equipped with sniper rifles to deal with long-range threats. The heavily armed counter attack team is responsible for eliminating threats so that other agents can protect and take the person they are protecting.
The security of presidential candidates and their campaign events is one of the department’s “most vital priorities,” an official said.
