DAfter Joe Biden, the couple Bill and Hillary Clinton also gave their public support to Kamala’s candidacy for President for the Democratic Party, while the party is still digesting the announcement of the current head of state’s withdrawal and begins an unprecedented process of changing its candidate just over 100 days before the elections.
According to the US network CNN, Joe Biden, who is recovering from Covid-19 at his home in Delaware, made the decision to withdraw in the last 48 hours and communicated it to some of his closest collaborators just “moments” before announcing it publicly. Kamala Harris herself was reportedly only informed during the day, according to the same source.
Praise for Biden’s decision and character was almost unanimous, but many followed Barack Obama’s lead and held back, for now, in supporting Kamala. This was the case of the Democratic leaders in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, and in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries.
Also the former Speaker of Congress, the influential Nancy Pelosi, did not announce support for Kamala.
Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race for re-election, announced today, comes a month before the Democratic convention, where a new candidate is expected to be chosen. The convention is scheduled for August 19-22 in Chicago, and what was supposed to be a confirmation of Joe Biden in the race for the White House has turned into an “open contest”, as the Associated Press wrote, in which 4,700 delegates will vote for a candidate to face Republican Donald Trump in the November presidential election.
Some Democrats have been advocating an “open” process, as an alternative to automatically replacing Biden with his number two, such as Congressmen Scott Wong, Julie Tsirkin, Peter Welch, Jon Tester or Joe Manchin, who is currently an independent.
Some groups of congressmen (‘caucus’) immediately sided with Kamala, such as the African-American caucus, which offered “total” support to the candidacy, and the caucus that brings together the progressives (further to the left).
“Millions of Americans voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the primaries. Vice President Harris has proven time and time again that she can assert herself as an alternative to Donald Trump and run a powerful campaign for Democrats at the ballot box,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal, chair of the Progressive Caucus, said in a statement.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) said today that, although the resignation of a presidential candidate just over three months before the election is “unprecedented”, a “transparent and orderly” process will begin in the coming days to replace Joe Biden as the candidate.
“The work we must do now, while unprecedented, is clear. In the coming days, the Party will undertake a transparent and orderly process to move forward as a united Democratic Party with a candidate who can defeat (former President and Republican nominee) Donald Trump in November,” said CND President Jaime Harrison in a statement.
This process, he added, will be governed by the rules and procedures established by the Democratic Party, at a time when delegates “are willing to take seriously their responsibility to quickly present a candidate to the American people.”
“Democrats are united and prepared in their determination to win in November. As we move forward to formally select our Party’s nominee, our values as Democrats remain the same: to reduce costs, restore freedoms, protect the rights of all people, and save our democracy from the threat of dictatorship,” Harrison said.
In a “short time,” he added, the American people will hear from the Democratic Party “on the next steps and the path forward for the nominating process.”
