“D“Give us the tools faster and we will finish the job faster,” the Israeli head of government urged in a speech before both houses of the US Congress in Washington, after recently criticizing the administration of US President Joe Biden for blocking a supply of bombs.
During his speech, Netanyahu proposed the establishment of a demilitarized zone in the Gaza Strip after the war against the Islamist group Hamas, which would be administered by Palestinian civilian authorities but surrounded by Israeli military control.
In his vision for the territory, he stated that “the demilitarization and deradicalization of Gaza” can lead “to a future of security, prosperity and peace.”
The Israeli prime minister made no reference to the formation of a single government for the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, or the creation of an independent Palestinian state, which are the official plans of the United States.
Netanyahu was invited to make his fourth speech before the United States Congress in a show of support in the face of tensions between the Joe Biden administration and the Israeli government over the way it is carrying out the offensive in the Gaza Strip.
At a time when the United States is going through turbulent political times due to the proximity of the presidential elections on November 5, Benjamin Netanyahu paid a warm tribute to Republican candidate Donald Trump.
“I want to thank President Trump for everything he has done for Israel,” the Israeli leader said, once again deploring the “despicable” assassination attempt that targeted the former Republican leader of the White House on July 13.
On the other hand, he praised Democratic President Joe Biden for “his tireless efforts on behalf of the hostages” held by Hamas since the Palestinian group’s attack on October 7 in southern Israel that killed almost 1,200, giving rise to the current conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Biden withdrew his candidacy for the White House on Sunday and expressed support for his vice president, Kamala Harris, in the electoral race against Trump.
Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with Biden and Harris on Thursday, and with Trump on Friday.
Netanyahu’s speech was also marked by strong protests by thousands of demonstrators outside the Capitol building against Israel’s invasion of the Gaza Strip in pursuit of Hamas, which has already caused around 40,000 deaths in the last nine months, most of them civilians, according to local authorities.
According to the Associated Press (AP) and the CNN television network, dozens of congressmen, mainly Democrats, missed the Israeli head of government’s speech, while others applauded him enthusiastically and still others wore t-shirts demanding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
