“A The Portuguese Embassy in Venezuela and the Consulates General in Caracas and Valencia are permanently monitoring the Portuguese Community residing in the country and are appealing to Portuguese citizens to remain calm and avoid unnecessary travel,” the embassy states on its Instagram page.

According to estimates from the Portuguese consulates general in the cities of Caracas and Valencia, there are around 600,000 Portuguese and Portuguese descendants in Venezuela.

The Embassy’s appeal comes on a day when thousands of Venezuelans, shouting “Until the end” and “this government will fall”, took to the streets today to reject the results released by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which gave Nicolás Maduro victory in Sunday’s presidential elections.

The protests began in several regions in the interior of the country, including the state of Falcón, and later spread to other locations, including the city of Caracas, where neighborhood populations have been on the streets for several hours.

In the eastern part of the capital, in the poor neighborhood of Petare, considered the largest in Latin America, several people, some of them hooded, took to the streets shouting slogans against Nicolás Maduro, destroying his campaign posters.

Hundreds of protesters, on foot and on motorcycles, went from the center of Petare to the warehouses of the National Electoral Council in Mariche, shouting and chanting, “it will fall, this Government will fall” and “we will go until the end”.

Security forces repressed several protests in Chacaíto and Altamira, both in the east, and arrested several people, some of them violently, according to the YouTube broadcast by the VPI TV channel.

Meanwhile, according to the Penal Forum (FP), as of 5:00 pm local time (10:00 pm in Lisbon), 13 people had been arrested as part of post-election demonstrations.

Still in Caracas, protesters reportedly rescued an employee of the Bolivarian National Guard (military police) who was abandoned by his companions.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela today officially proclaimed Nicolás Maduro as President for the period 2025-2031.

According to the CNE, Nicolás Maduro was reelected for a third consecutive term with 51.20% of the votes, having obtained 5.15 million votes.

The main opposition candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, obtained just under 4.5 million votes (44.2%), according to official data released by the CNE.

The Venezuelan opposition claims victory in Sunday’s presidential election, with 70 percent of the vote going to opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, opposition leader María Corina Machado said, refusing to recognize the results proclaimed by the CNE.

Several countries have already congratulated Maduro on his victory, such as Russia, Nicaragua, Cuba, China and Iran, but others have shown great concern about the transparency of the elections in Venezuela, such as Portugal, Spain and the United States.
