Before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, Colombia abstained from voting on the resolution that called for the publication of the minutes with the results of the presidential elections of July 28 in Venezuela.

Although 18 votes were needed in the OAS to approve the resolution, Only 17 countries voted in favor and 11, including Colombia, abstained.
Colombia’s decision before the OAS caused surprise after on the morning of this Wednesday, July 31, 2024, President Gustavo Petro, through a message on the X social network, stated that in Venezuela it is needed “a transparent scrutiny with vote counting, minutes and with oversight by all political forces in the country and professional international oversight.”
The serious doubts surrounding the Venezuelan electoral process could lead its people to a deep, violent polarization with serious consequences of permanent division of a nation that has known how to unite many times in its history.
