A Ukraine is accusing Russian forces of killing and dismembering a Ukrainian prisoner of war.
On the social network Telegram, Ukraine’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, urged the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations to investigate an image that was widely circulated this Saturday and which, according to the official, shows the prisoner of war in question.
“A photograph, presumably of a Ukrainian prisoner whose head and limbs were cut off by the Russians, has appeared online,” Dmytro Lubinets said. “In light of these horrific images, I urgently appeal to the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN to record yet another violation of human rights by the terrorist country,” he added.
On the same social network, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin stated that an urgent investigation had been launched into information circulated on social networks about the murder and dismemberment of a Ukrainian prisoner of war. “Russia systematically repeats the crimes of the Nazis, showing complete contempt for all norms of the civilized world,” he wrote.
It should be noted that Russia denies the existence of torture or other forms of ill-treatment of prisoners of war.
In turn, as Reuters recalls, a United Nations commission of inquiry on Ukraine argued in a report published in March that it had documented credible allegations of executions of at least 32 Ukrainian prisoners of war, in 12 separate incidents, between December 2023 and February. Three of the incidents were independently verified.
He also said he had gathered a wealth of evidence that Russia systematically tortured Ukrainian prisoners of war, documenting threats of rape and the use of electric shocks to the genitals.
