“O July 28 is a milestone from which the transition to democracy in Venezuela began,” Corina Machado told thousands of Venezuelans who gathered in an area of eastern Caracas.
Amid shouts of “freedom”, Corina Machado highlighted the strength of the citizens who took to the streets despite the repression against the demonstrations that took place between Monday and Tuesday, in rejection of the official results of the elections that officially gave victory to President Nicolás Maduro.
“After a brutal repression, they thought they were going to silence, scare or paralyze us. The presence of each one of you here shows the world the magnitude of the strength and means that we will go until the end,” he assured.
Corina Machado stressed that “today fear is elsewhere” and said that she will not renounce the right to peaceful protest nor will she accept “blackmail” that “equates victims with criminals”.
“We do not have firearms, it is the regime that uses them against the population: Civic and peaceful protest is not violence,” he highlighted.
Thousands of people demonstrated today in Caracas and other cities in Venezuela to protest against the results of the presidential elections announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which re-elected President Nicolás Maduro.
Corina Machado was welcomed at the rally in Caracas with cries of “freedom”, after declaring that she feared for her life, in an article published in Thursday’s edition of the Wall Street Journal.
Opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who replaced Corina Machado in the election after the regime declared her ineligible, was not present at the Caracas demonstration.
Maduro has constantly threatened the two opposition leaders, considering them “responsible” for the deaths that occurred during Monday’s riots (at least 11, according to non-governmental organizations) and threatening them with “imprisonment.”
Thousands of “Chavistas” responded to the opposition demonstrations, marching in Caracas “in defense of peace” and in support of the announced re-election of Nicolás Maduro as President of Venezuela.
