Taiwan’s meteorological service estimated the magnitude at 6.3 and the depth at 9.7 kilometers.
The agency sent out mobile phone alerts asking residents to “remain calm and seek shelter nearby”.
At 8:00 am (1:00 am in Lisbon), firefighters issued a statement in which they said that “no damage was reported” after the earthquake.
The Taiwan archipelago is regularly hit by earthquakes because it is located near the junction of two tectonic plates.
On April 3, 17 people died following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake, the most powerful in 25 years, according to Taiwanese authorities, also with its epicenter in the mountainous region of Hualien.
