At least eleven prisoners were killed by the Haitian National Police (PNH) during a Escape from the Saint-Marc civil prison, attacked this Friday by gangs armed which allowed the inmates to escape, law enforcement officials reported.

At a press conference, the police indicated that The prisoners died in exchanges of gunfire with some uniformed men.
“Around 2 a.m. (06:00 GMT), the bandits attacked the Saint-Marc civil prison and several prisoners escaped,” said police spokesman Michel-Ange Louis-Jeune.
He added that one of the escapees from the Saint-Marc prison, some 100 kilometres south of the capital, was arrested in the town of Arcahaie thanks to the collaboration of the population.
Escapes from civilian prisons have become commonplace in Haiti over the past decade and So far in 2024, there have been at least three major prison escapes in Port-au-Prince, Cross of Bouquets and Saint Mark.
Hundreds of prisoners escaped during these jailbreaks, further worsening the precarious security situation in Haiti.
Last June, the deployment of troops from the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMAS) to Haiti began, led by Kenya and approved by the UN.
