“EThis is a defining moment, this may be the best, the last opportunity to bring the hostages home, to achieve a ceasefire and to put everyone on the path to lasting peace and security,” Anthony Blinken said during a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
This was Blinken’s ninth trip to the region since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip on October 7.
The head of US diplomacy assured that he is in the region “as part of an intensive diplomatic effort” by US President Joe Biden to “try to bring this agreement to a successful conclusion”.
“It’s time to do it,” he concluded before meeting with Herzog.
Blinken is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later.
Hamas, which did not directly participate in this round of negotiations, accused Netanyahu of moving away from the points agreed more than two months ago, announced by Biden and approved by the UN Security Council.
The Palestinian Islamist group urged the mediating countries – the United States, Egypt and Qatar – to force Israel to implement what was agreed “so that the negotiations do not enter a vicious circle”.
