O The incident caused injuries to fifty passengers and occurred after a series of malfunctions in Boeing planes, which raised questions about the quality controls of the North American aircraft manufacturer.
Passengers whose seatbelts were not fastened were thrown toward the ceiling after the plane suddenly lost altitude.
The plane operated by the Chilean company Latam was flying between Sydney, Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand.
The US civil aviation regulator requested the inspections after a report that there was an “uncontrolled forward movement of the captain’s seat that resulted in a rapid descent,” according to a statement.
Some 158 planes registered in the United States and 737s registered in the rest of the world will be covered by the regulator’s directive.
Since the incident, four other cases of “uncontrolled movements” of pilot or co-pilot seats have been reported by Boeing to the regulator, with three cases involving seat adjustment levers being too loose.
Justifying the inspections, the US civil aviation regulator notes that an “involuntary and prolonged movement of the seat” could result in “involuntary and abrupt manipulation of the flight controls, which could cause a rapid descent of the aircraft and seriously injure passengers and cabin crew”.
