“EWe are all here for one simple reason: we love this country,” the candidate said Wednesday (early morning in Lisbon), on the third night of the convention. “This election is about freedom,” he declared, speaking of everything from reproductive freedom to the freedom to not suffer gun violence and to live life as one sees fit.
Walz focused much of his message on the concerns and needs of the middle class and the underprivileged, speaking of his humble origins and growing up in a rural Nebraska village of just 400 people.
“If you’re in the middle class or trying to get there, Kamala Harris will cut your taxes,” Walz promised. “If you’re being squeezed by drug prices, Kamala Harris will take on Big Pharma,” he continued.
“If you’re hoping to buy a home, Kamala Harris will help make it more affordable. And she will defend your freedom to live the life you want to live,” he continued.
These measures, which drew great applause, were contrasted with Project 2025 (a 900-page document with conservative proposals) and the policies that opponents Donald Trump and JD Vance want to implement.
“They’re going to defund Social Security and MediCare, they’re going to ban abortion without even having Congress… It’s an agenda that no one asked for and that only serves the richest and most extremists,” he charged. “It does nothing for our struggling neighbors,” he added. “Is it weird? Absolutely. But it’s also wrong and dangerous.”
Walz was the Democrat who coined the term “weirdos” to describe Republican candidates, something that has bothered Trump and Vance.
“We have something better to offer Americans,” Walz said, praising Kamala Harris’s record and progressive proposals. “Kamala is strong, experienced and ready,” said the governor, whose family was present and visibly moved.
“This is how we’re going to turn the page on Donald Trump,” he promised.
Walz, a former social studies teacher and high school football coach, compared the campaign to a game that is almost over and you have to leave it all on the field.
“Healthcare and affordable housing are human rights, and the government stays out of our bedrooms,” he summarized, about the broad outlines of what the ‘ticket’ believes in.
“This is how we’re going to make America a place where no child goes hungry, no community is left behind, and no one is told they don’t belong.”
