PAt least three people were killed and four seriously injured in a knife attack at a festival in the German city of Solingen on Friday. Police say the attacker is on the run.
The attack took place at 9:45 pm in the central square, the Fronhof, when a man randomly stabbed several people, reports the Bild newspaper.
Dozens of teams are on site providing assistance to the injured. According to one of the festival’s organizers, Philipp Müller, who told the Solinger Tageblatt newspaper, nine people were fighting for their lives.
The festival, which was supposed to celebrate the 650th anniversary of the city of Solingen, was cancelled and the area cordoned off. A police helicopter was flying overhead, while several roads were closed to traffic.

Police have advised all residents to stay indoors. Solingen has around 160,000 inhabitants and is located near the cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf.
80,000 visitors were expected over three days.
