DAccording to the state news agency KCNA, Kim Jong-un has promised to encourage the development of these drones to increase the war readiness of the North Korean army.
Photos released by KCNA showed a white drone with X-shaped tails and wings crashing into and allegedly destroying a target resembling South Korea’s main K-2 main battle tank in a test that reportedly took place on Saturday.
Most combat drones hover over targets and attack with missiles.
KCNA said the test involved several types of drones designed to fly at different distances and attack enemy targets on land or at sea. It said the drones flew along various routes before accurately striking the targets.
Kim said global trends in military technologies and modern combat show the importance of drones in warfare and that North Korea’s military should be equipped with advanced drones “as soon as possible.”
The leader called for accelerated development and production of various systems, including explosive drones to be used by infantry and special operations units, multi-purpose reconnaissance and attack drones and underwater drones, KCNA said.
The armies of South Korea and the United States began summer military maneuvers last Monday, at a time marked by poor relations with the North Korean regime, which has moved closer militarily to Russia.
The drills, called ‘Ulchi freedom shield’, run until Thursday and include a command post exercise based on computer simulations, as well as live-fire maneuvers on the ground and civil defense exercises, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The maneuvers are similar in scale to last year’s drills, involving about 19,000 South Korean troops, although they include 48 field exercises in total, up from 38 in 2023.
The civil defense drills will also simulate a North Korean nuclear attack for the first time this year, a military source told Yonhap news agency.
The maneuvers come at a time of difficult cross-border relations, especially since Kim Jong-un declared the South his “main national enemy” earlier this year.
Pyongyang has stepped up military cooperation with Moscow over the past year and Kiev has accused North Korea of supplying Russia with huge amounts of weapons, including missiles used on Ukrainian territory.
