Important changes to hand luggage: effective from September 2024

As of September 1, 2024, new regulations regarding items permitted in hand luggage have come into force. These measures are intended to improve aviation safety and ensure greater transparency in costs for passengers.

The new rules affect travelers within the European Union and those headed to the United States. Therefore, it is important that you know what items are prohibited to avoid inconveniences at airports and ensure a smooth trip.

One of the most significant changes is the restriction of sharp and cutting objects. These items may pose a safety risk and are strictly prohibited in the aircraft cabin:

• Knives with a blade longer than six centimeters.
• Scissors with blades longer than six centimeters.
• Automatic knives and open blades.
• Cutters and corkscrews.

Regarding electronic devicesthe only restricted item is the drone. Its transportation is at the discretion of the airline or airport, so it is advisable check specific policies before traveling.

To counter the risk of liquid explosives, regulations strictly limit the amount passengers can carry in their hand luggage. Only containers of up to 100 milliliters are allowed to be transported, which must be inside a transparent bag. In addition, each person is allowed carry a maximum of one litre in total. Product examples:

• Perfumes.
• Gels and shampoos.
• Drinks and other liquids.

Tools and equipment that can be used as weapons are also prohibited:

• Screwdrivers and chisels.
• Drills, power saws and carpet blades.
• Hammers, pliers and pincers.
• Wrenches, blowtorches and staplers.

If passengers bring these items, they should be aware that they are not permitted in the cabin and must be transported in checked baggage. Items included are:

• Bows, arrows, slings and slingshots.
• Fishing rods and pool cues.
• Golf clubs, hockey clubs and baseball bats.
• Firearms, including replicas, harpoons and fishing rifles.
• Hiking poles and ice skates.

Finally, any chemical or explosive substances are completely prohibited. This includes:

• Flares and fireworks.
• Dynamite and other explosives.
• Pepper spray and tear gas.

Most medications are allowed, but some medical equipment, such as oxygen cylinders, may have restrictions. It is advisable to carry a medical note or one from your doctor to avoid problems during security control.
