Evo Morales has his refugee status withdrawn in Argentina

The Government of Argentina decided this Wednesday to remove former Bolivian president Evo Morales (2006-2019) from the refugee status that he had enjoyed since December 2019, official sources reported.

The Ministry of Justice of Argentina reported in a statement “that The refugee status granted to former Bolivian president Juan Evo Morales Ayma ceased“.

Javier Milei’s executive alleged that this refugee status “was misused as a political tool” by former Argentine president Alberto FernĆ”ndez (2019-2023), “omitting compliance with the requirements established” by the Argentine law of recognition and protection of refugees.

Peronist Alberto FernƔndez granted refuge to Morales, with whom he had good ties, at the end of 2019, after the Bolivian leader left his country in the midst of a political upheaval that Morales denounced as a coup against him.

At that time, the FernĆ”ndez Government considered Morales to be “persecuted”, but granted him refuge on the condition that he did not make political statements from Argentina.

The Argentine Ministry of Justice asserted this Wednesday that “Morales arrived in Argentina after fleeing Bolivia in 2019 after trying to stay in power through electoral fraud” and was received “with unjustified privileges, despite the serious accusations against him. among them corruption, electoral fraud and political persecution of opponents.”

“Since then, has resumed its leadership in Bolivian politicscurrently governed by a leader of his political party -in reference to President Luis Arce- and has traveled freely to his country of origin. This shows that he does not face the dangers that justify the humanitarian protection of the shelter,” the statement said.

The Argentine Government maintained that refugee status is a right that must be granted “seriously, not as a tool of political convenience.”

“This Government will in no way use the resources of Argentines to protect criminals, terrorists or attempted dictators. We do not help those who sow terror and attack democracy,” the statement concludes.

The leader of the Movement towards Socialism (MAS) of Bolivia has questioned Milei several times, who, in turn, does not hide his differences with the current Bolivian president, Luis Arce, leader of the same party as Morales.
