Five Israeli bombings hit the south of Beirut, Lebanon, and its surroundings this Saturday, a stronghold of the Islamist movement Hezbollah.indicated an official Lebanese media, after the Israeli army called the inhabitants of the area to evacuate.

“Israeli enemy warplanes launched four very violent bombing raids against the southern suburbs [de Beirut] and another against [la zona de] Chweifat”, Lebanese National News Agency ANI reported.

AFP correspondents in the Lebanese capital heard several explosions and saw columns of smoke rising in the south of Beirut.

Air traffic at Lebanon’s only airport, near Beirut’s southern suburbs, “continues despite the Israeli enemy’s aggression” in the area, ANI noted.

The news agency added that several planes of Middle East Airlines (MEA), the only airline still serving Beirut, had just landed.

Israeli army issues evacuation calls before attacking

The southern suburbs of Beirut have been the target of Israeli bombing for several days, especially at night. The Israeli military often issues evacuation calls before attacks.

Many residents of this area have fled to other Lebanese regions since Israel intensified its bombing campaign on September 23 against Hezbollah.

The Lebanese Islamist movement, close to Iran, opened a front with Israel on October 8, 2023 in support of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in Gaza, which is waging war against the Israeli army.
