Authorities arrested man who abandoned his dog during Hurricane Milton

Hurricane Milton jeopardized the safety of thousands of families in Florida, United States, who were threatened by the force of the cyclone. Many Tampa residents had to evacuate their homes and travel to shelters and even other states to stay safe.

In the midst of the emergency, A Highway Patrol patrol near Interstate 75 found a dog, now named Trooper, tied up and abandoned.

According to ABC7News, Monday, October 14, 2024 Giovanny Aldama García, the dog’s former owner, was arrested after being charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a serious crime.

“We take this crime very seriously and this defendant will face the consequences of his actions,” said Suzy López, the state prosecutor leading the case.

Why did you abandon the dog?

The dog was rescued by authorities in critical condition and had to be transferred to a local shelter to be treated for severe stress and exposure to health conditions.

“Due to the circumstances and the extreme danger and risk of death caused by the defendant to the dog, the defendant’s actions caused an excessive and unnecessary inflection of pain and suffering to the dog“, reads the highway police affidavit.

Telemundo Tampa highlighted Aldama García was identified as the owner of the dog at a shelter, where rHe declared ownership of the pet, which allowed the dog to be taken in by another family. “The man allegedly said he abandoned his pet because he was going to Georgia and had no one to leave him with,” they explained.

Although the former owner of the pet was accused of a serious crime, he was released on bail after paying $2,500.

The case caused outrage among many animal rights activists and residents of the area. The actions resonated all the way to the Florida governor’s office, where President Ron DeSantis gave a reassurance regarding the status of the pet, which is ready to be adopted.

“At that time we said you can’t tie up a dog and leave it there during a storm, it’s totally unacceptable, and we’re going to hold them accountable.s,” DeSantis said during a conference last Tuesday, October 15.
