1:15 pm Zelensky says kyiv has already requested air defenses to protect against “new risks”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated this Friday that Defense Minister Rustém Umérov is already holding meetings with allies to request new air defense systems “capable of protecting lives from new risks”, after the launch on the eve of the new ‘Oréshnik’ ballistic missile by Russia.
“Today more details have been found out about the new missile that Russia used to attack Dnipro. And we will give all the details to journalists and the international media,” he said during his daily address.
“The world must know the truth and realize that the only one who does not want peace is Russia. That is why Russia needs escalation”Zelensky stressed.
11:25 a.m. Kyiv says Russian troops advancing fast as missile fears grow
kyiv reported on Friday that Russian forces were advancing up to 300 meters a day on the eastern front, after Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a warning to the West by firing a new hypersonic missile at Ukraine.
The Ukrainian parliament also closed amid growing fears of a missile attack, a day after the attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro with a nuclear-capable missile.
The attack marked a serious escalation of Moscow’s 33-month-old invasion of Ukraine, and caused the Russian ruble to fall on Friday to its lowest level against the US dollar since March 2022.
A Ukrainian military source said Russian forces were advancing “200-300 meters per day” near the Ukrainian center of Kurakhove, in the eastern Donetsk region. The source called the situation “worse” than around Pokrovsk, also a key destination for Russia.
9:19 am Russia says Israeli attack on Palmyra violates Syrian sovereignty and international law
“This military action by Israel on the territory of Syria, as well as all those that preceded it, are a serious violation of the sovereignty of that country and the basic norms of international law”said the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, María Zajárova, in a statement.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported this Friday that at least 92 people were killed and dozens were injured in the attack launched on Wednesday by Israel against the historic city of Palmyra, adjacent to the important ruins of the same name declared a World Heritage Site.
“With deep regret we note that the fierce armed confrontation in the Middle East has led to the devaluation not only of human life, but also of cultural and historical memory,” Zajárova’s statement said.
He also stressed that “the definitive loss of mutual respect for the region’s neighbors and the extreme increase in conflict violence may make the prospect of lasting peace in the Middle East elusive.”
7:42 a.m. Russia says it captured village near besieged city in Ukraine
Russia said on Friday it had captured another village near the eastern Ukrainian town of Kurakhove, where Moscow’s forces are closing in after months of steady advances.
The Russian Defense Ministry said at a daily news conference that it had “liberated” the frontline village of Novodmytrivka, about 10 kilometers (six miles) north of Kurakhove.
7:28 am According to Lavrov, “Zelensky was scared” by the launch of a new Russian hypersonic missile
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said this Friday that the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, was “scared” by the launch of the new Russian Oreshkin hypersonic missile against his country’s territory.
“Regarding the reaction to our response (…) Zelensky got scared. He began to blame his masters for leaving him defenseless against this action of the Russian Federation”he said during a press conference in the Belarusian city of Brest.
Lavrov considered that, for that reason alone, the launch of the Oreshkin missile against an arms factory in the Dnipro region was “useful.”
Furthermore, he accused the West not of allowing Ukraine to attack Russian territory with long-range missiles, but of authorizing its own military to carry out such launches.
“They say they allowed Zelensky to use those missiles. They authorized it themselves. Everyone understands that perfectly. The Russian president has said it on several occasions. Without his direct participation, none of those missiles would have flown anywhere.”he pointed out.
6:29 am Russia is sure the US ‘got’ the message after attack on Ukraine
Russia said Friday that it is sure that the United States “understood” President Vladimir Putin’s message after the Russian attack on Ukraine with a ballistic missile and assured that it frustrated kyiv’s military plans for 2025.
“We have no doubt that the current administration in Washington has had the opportunity to familiarize itself with this announcement and understood it”Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov told reporters.
His statements come a day after the firing of a Russian medium-range hypersonic missile against Dnipro, in central-eastern Ukraine, and after notable advances by Moscow’s troops on the eastern front.
5:30 am Ukrainian Parliament cancels its session due to threat of attack
The Ukrainian Parliament canceled its session on Friday, several deputies reported, due to the increasing risk of a Russian missile attack against the kyiv district where government buildings are located.
The regular session of questions to the executive “has been cancelled,” Yevgenia Kravchuk told the AFP news agency. “There are signs of an increasing risk of attacks in the government district in the coming days,” he added. Russia fired a medium-range hypersonic missile at Dnipro, in east-central Ukraine, on Thursday.
5:25 am What is known about the new Russian ballistic missile?
Putin highlighted that the speed reached by the new missile is “Mach 10” or “2.5-3 kilometers per second”, which makes it undetectable by enemy anti-aircraft defenses.
The Oreshnik is part of the weapons systems “unparalleled in the world” presented to society by Putin in 2018, in what many called the new Star Wars between Russia and NATO.
Russian experts, who recall that the Oreshnik can carry nuclear warheads, point out that the missile has a minimum of six individual guided warheads.
