We know that end-of-year holiday meals have a reputation for being quite heavy and copious. Generally, when we sit down at the table, we prepare ourselves for a farandole of endless dishes: salmon, foie gras, oysters, turkey, log… We no longer know where to turn. Not to mention the champagne and wines that accompany them and only accentuate all these excesses. (Please note, alcohol should be consumed in moderation). Result ? At the end of the meal, it is not uncommon to have difficulty digesting.
Many feel heavy and bloated. To remedy these inconveniences, some people turn to sparkling water thinking that thanks to the bubbles digestion will be facilitated. A “bad idea” according to a gastroenterologist. Here’s why.
It’s on his Instagram account that the gastroenterologist William Berrebi has been interested in a very popular drink for many years now: sparkling water. Thanks to its gas, the latter is often known to be an aid to digestion. A preconceived idea since the reality is quite different according to the expert. Indeed, Dr William Berrebi says taking sparkling water to digest better is a “bad idea”. On the contrary, it could even make things worse: “When you drink carbonated drinks, you bring air bubbles into your stomach and into your colon and therefore you will have more dyspepsia (difficulty digesting), belching (burping) and bloating in the area of the stomach. ‘intestine”.
As you will have understood, having a sparkling drink during or after holiday meals is not the best option, quite the contrary. If you have the impression that this relieves you, it is a simple placebo effect surely produced by the bubbles and their refreshing side. In fact, this drink would only burden your digestive system with the presence of air and increase bloating, nausea and abdominal pain.
To do this, it is best to opt for plain water during all holiday meals. Afterwards, you can, for example, turn to a ginger or peppermint herbal tea which are two ingredients particularly beneficial for digestion unlike bubbles.
