NThe exercise used fake nuclear warheads mounted on two long-range cruise missiles fired in the direction of the Yellow Sea, he said.
“A simulated tactical nuclear strike was carried out in the early hours of September 2 to warn enemies of the danger of nuclear war,” KCNA said.
The operation was a response to joint military exercises, Ulchi Freedom Shield, by South Korea and the United States, which took place over 11 days and ended on 31 August.
“Two long-range strategic cruise missiles with fake nuclear warheads were launched” towards the sea off North Korea’s western coast, the agency added.
On Saturday, South Korea’s General Staff announced that an unknown number of cruise missiles had been fired in the direction of the Yellow Sea around 04:00 (20:00 on Friday in Lisbon).
On Thursday, the North Korean regime said it had fired two short-range ballistic missiles as part of a new “simulated tactical nuclear attack”.
Joint military maneuvers by Washington and Seoul systematically arouse the anger of Pyongyang, which sees them as rehearsals for an invasion of its territory.
The allies claim that these defensive maneuvers are defensive and are intended to enhance bilateral military cooperation.
On Tuesday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited a naval command center where he presented plans in case of war, including “simultaneous high-intensity attacks” against South Korean military positions.
In addition to missile tests, North Korea is trying to put a spy satellite into orbit, but the second attempt in three months failed on 24 August.
The two Koreas are technically still at war since their conflict between 1950 and 1953, which ended with a ceasefire rather than a peace treaty.
