Dr. Jimmy Mohamed, social media star doctor, columnist and bestselling author, has struck again. Followed by millions of people on Instagram and TikTok, he shares advice and tips for a healthier life. In his latest book Zero Constraints for Weight Loss, he focuses on a common but often underestimated fruit: the apple. According to him, it has incredible virtues for our digestion, our satiety, and even our immunity.
In his work, the doctor explains that the apple would be a slimming ally. Unlike cakes or sugary snacks swallowed in a few seconds, eating an apple requires chewing, which promotes the feeling of satiety. “The chemical message of satiety only arrives about twenty to thirty minutes after a meal,” he explains. By slowly chewing this crunchy fruit, our brain has time to understand that the stomach is filling, thereby reducing cravings. In addition, the apple contains fiber which, by forming a gel in the stomach, reinforces this feeling of satiety. Result: it suppresses the appetite while being low in calories.
This fruit is rich in pectin, a fiber present in its skin and seeds, which acts as a prebiotic: it nourishes the beneficial bacteria of our microbiota, thus improving digestive health. According to Dr. Mohamed, pectin strengthens the immune system, reduces the permeability of the digestive tract to toxins, and has anti-inflammatory properties. However, he warns against excess: consuming too much pectin can cause bloating and gas.
