The streets of a Portuguese village flooded by a torrent of red wine!

The alcohol flowed freely, literally. This Sunday, September 10, 2023, the inhabitants of Sao Lourenço do Bairro, a village located between Porto and Lisbon in Portugal, saw more than two million liters of… red wine pour into their streets.

It’s a flood that’s hard to imagine. As reported by the local media Coimbra Diary, two vats at the Levira distillery gave way, letting more than two million liters of red wine flow into the streets of this Portuguese village of 2,000 inhabitants. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, this exceptional flood caused a lot of material damage, such as cellars flooded by the alcoholic liquid.

The Levira distillery did not shirk its responsibilities in this flood which was as unexpected as it was spectacular : “We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with repairs and cleaning up the damage. We are doing our best to resolve the situation as quickly as possible”, reacted the company in the columns of the newspaper. Fortunately, the firefighters were able to intervene in time to avoid an environmental disaster. They were able to prevent the flow of alcoholic liquid from reaching the nearby Certimale River. Putting water in your wine, yes. But it was better to avoid the opposite in specific cases.
