FYesterday, with knowledge of the attack, but who asked not to be identified, they told several media outlets that the incident took place at the federal prison in Tucson, in the state of Arizona, in the southwestern United States.
The US Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) confirmed that a prisoner was assaulted at the Tucson medium security prison at around 12:30 pm on Friday (8:30 pm in Lisbon).
In a statement, BOP said officials were able to contain the incident and took measures to save the life of the unnamed inmate, who was later transported to receive medical treatment at a hospital.
No prison staff were injured and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was notified, the agency said, adding that visits to the prison, which has about 380 prisoners, have been suspended.
Derek Chauvin, 47, was transferred in August 2022 from a maximum security state prison in Minnesota, in the western United States, to Tucson, to serve a sentence of 22 and a half years in prison for the murder of George Floyd.
Chauvin’s lawyer, Eric Nelson, had asked that the former Minnesota police officer not have contact with the rest of the prisoners, warning that he could be the target of retaliation.
In prison in Minnesota, Chauvin was held primarily in solitary confinement “largely for his own protection,” Nelson wrote in court documents last year.
Last week, the United States Supreme Court rejected an appeal filed by Chavin against his murder conviction. The former agent is also trying to annul his confession, alleging the existence of new evidence.
George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after Chauvin used his knee to immobilize him, pressing the African-American man’s neck against the ground for around nine and a half minutes.
A video from a passerby captured Floyd’s screams, as he claimed he couldn’t breathe.
After the images were released on social media, protests against police violence and racism followed in dozens of North American cities, some of which were the scene of acts of looting.
The four police officers involved in the incident were fired and sentenced to prison terms.
An investigation by the US Department of Justice, requested after tycoon Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide in his cell in August 2019, while awaiting trial for sex trafficking, last June highlighted a series of flaws in the country’s prison system.
