UA series of loud explosions were heard in Kyiv at around 03:00 (01:00 in Lisbon), when the city’s air defenses were activated for the second time in the space of a week.
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said on messaging platform Telegram that debris from intercepted missiles fell in the eastern district of Dniprovskyi, injuring at least 45 people.
Klitschko added that 18 people were hospitalized, while 27 people received medical treatment at the scene.
Meanwhile, the official said that the number of injured had risen to 53, including six children.
The attack caused fires in an apartment building, a private house and several cars and shattered the windows of a pediatric hospital, he said.
Falling missile debris also damaged the Dniprovskyi district’s water supply system.
On Monday, a Russian missile attack destroyed several homes on the outskirts of Kiev and left more than 100 families temporarily without electricity.
This morning’s attack occurred at a time when Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, was meeting at the White House with the leader of the United States, Joe Biden.
During the meeting, Biden announced that he approved 200 million dollars (more than 185 million euros) in military aid to Ukraine.
The United States Congress is blocking a package worth more than 106 billion dollars (98.3 billion euros), which includes funds for Ukraine and Israel.
The US is currently the largest provider of military support to Kiev, with approved support worth more than 110 billion dollars (102 billion euros) since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
In the meeting with Zelensky, the American President also warned that the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, wants to attack Ukraine’s power plants again, to worsen the situation during the winter.
Ukrainian telecommunications provider Kyivstar, which has more than 24 million mobile customers across the country, said services were disrupted on Tuesday by a “powerful cyber attack”.
The same attack also disrupted the air strike warning system in part of the Kyiv region, admitted the head of the Kyiv regional administration, Ruslan Kravchenko.
