O Christmas dinner at Airbus Atlantic, a subsidiary of aircraft manufacturer Airbus, in France, generated an outbreak of gastroenteritis that affected more than 700 workers.
According to The Guardian, French health authorities have opened an investigation to determine the causes of the outbreak at the party, organized and served by the company’s own canteen in Montoir-de-Bretagne, in the Loire-Atlantique region, in western France.
In total, 2,600 people were at this dinner, who were able to enjoy a rich menu, including foie gras, escalopes, lobster and tourniquet, as well as a variety of desserts, including ice cream and chocolate and walnut mousse, for just 15 euros. per person.
Dinner ended up, however, being expensive for those affected by the outbreak. Most of them showed “clinical signs of vomiting and/or diarrhea” between 24 and 48 hours after the meal that took place on December 14th.
The investigation seeks to find out whether the outbreak was caused by bacteria, or by an extremely contagious virus. The results should be known next week, said a spokesperson for the health authorities, cited by The Guardian.
“I had cramps and headaches like I’ve never had before. It was worse than giving birth,” one of those affected told the French newspaper Ouest-France.
An Airbus spokesperson said that no one became “seriously ill”, and that “the case is now being handled by the health authority, which is leading the investigation”.
