“UAn entire nation is showing how much being European means [para os ucranianos]. I am proud of the way our Union responded to Ukraine’s request. Now we need to continue the political decision we took at the European Council [em dezembro de 2023]. In preparation for accession negotiations, we are beginning the screening process and creating a negotiation framework”, said Ursula von der Leyen, at the opening of a debate at the European Parliament, in Strasbourg (France).
Only in this way, added the President of the Commission, will it be possible to look at a European Union (EU) with more than 30 countries.
At the European Council in December last year, the 27 once again included in the conclusions that they side with Ukraine – which has been trying to repel an invasion from Russia for two years -, something that has been included in all summit conclusions since February 2022.
“However, we need to support this decision with adequate financing”, warned von der Leyen before the plenary.
The Commission has presented a multi-annual financial framework to “ensure stable and substantial financing” for Ukraine over the next four years – through a €50 billion package that is part of the budget proposal – “to support the day-to-day functioning of the State [a Ucrânia]stabilizing the economy, bringing it closer to the EU”.
“All this requires an updated EU budget,” he added.
