“EThis anniversary is a day for democratic governments to renew their commitment to a Ukrainian victory, on Ukraine’s terms, and to the flourishing of its democracy after the war. The people of Ukraine have not wavered in the face of authoritarian violence, and neither should Ukraine’s foreign allies.”can be read in the manifesto released today by Freedom House.
The Washington-based organization claims that “if the free world fails to resolutely support Ukraine at this time,” the international community will be forced “to confront a stronger and more ruthless Russian regime.”
“Freedom House calls on policymakers to continue providing Ukraine with much-needed military, humanitarian and budgetary assistance. We also urge governments to seize frozen Russian assets — especially in the United States and the European Union — and redirect them them to help rebuild Ukraine”, argues the think tank.
The organization also asks Kyiv’s allied countries to ensure a consensus on security guarantees in the region, in particular around NATO, advising the Atlantic Alliance to extend an offer of membership to the Ukrainian regime, at the same time as accession is processed. from the country to the European Union.
“Ukrainians are fighting for their lives, their sovereignty, their democracy and their future. The outcome of this war will have consequences that will span continents and generations. We must not abandon their cause, which is inseparable from ours”, concludes the Freedom House in the manifesto.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24, 2022, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since the Second World War (1939-1945).
Ukraine has relied on financial and weapons aid from Western allies. Kyiv’s allies have also enacted sanctions against key sectors of the Russian economy to try to diminish Moscow’s ability to finance the war effort in Ukraine.
The two-year-old conflict has caused the destruction of important infrastructure in several areas of Ukraine, as well as an undetermined number of civilian and military victims.
