“A European Union [UE] has been at Ukraine’s side since day one and will continue to be”, promised the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, in a statement on the day that marks two years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Kuleba, who personally praised Borrell’s role, considered that the EU had taken “historic decisions”, with the delivery of weapons to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, as well as the start of accession talks, but asked for more support.
“There are many improvements and decisions ahead and we work together to ensure their rapid adoption,” said the Ukrainian minister.
In March 2023, the EU promised that it would deliver one million large-caliber ammunition, specifically 155 millimeters, by March of this year, but by November last year it had managed to obtain just over 300,000 ammunition, between joint acquisition and increased production.
At the beginning of January, several government officials admitted the impossibility of fulfilling the promise by March, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, João Gomes Cravinho.
On Thursday, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, wrote to the EU’s foreign affairs and defense ministers to ask for more money to be spent to supply arms to Ukraine, which faces a lack of ammunition to fight Russia.
“The messages we heard are unequivocally clear: Ukrainian soldiers have the determination to fight, but they need ammunition. Urgently and in large quantities,” said the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs in the content of letters sent on Wednesday to ministers of the 27, to which the EFE agency had access.
“Doing nothing is not an option”, warned Josep Borrell.
In recent days, several European governments have insisted on the need to better coordinate the supply of military equipment to Ukraine, which has signed bilateral security agreements with the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, when Russia launched a military offensive with the arguments that it wanted to defend pro-Russian territories and eliminate alleged Nazism in the neighboring country.
The Russian invasion provoked Europe’s most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
