“EI am deeply concerned that any spark from this powder keg could lead to a much wider conflict,” said Volker Türk, adding that “this would have implications for all countries in the Middle East and many others.”
In his speech, where he presented the global panorama of the main human rights violations, Türk stated that the war between Israel and Hamas is already having regional effects: in Lebanon and Yemen.
“The military escalation in southern Lebanon between Israel, Hezbollah and other armed groups is extremely worrying,” Türk stressed, reporting that the clashes have already caused 200 deaths in Lebanon.
“Incidents in which civilians, including children, paramedics and journalists were killed during attacks must be thoroughly investigated,” he demanded, recalling that around 80,000 Israelis were also displaced from Israel’s border areas.
“It is imperative to do everything possible to avoid a wider conflict”, insisted the High Commissioner.
According to the UN High Commissioner, the Huthi rebels are disrupting global maritime trade and causing an increase in the prices of various products by launching missiles at ships in the Red Sea in support of Hamas, generating “a particularly significant impact on countries under development”.
“There is a serious risk that the conflict will spread to Yemen itself, with potentially serious consequences for the Yemeni population, which is already suffering from the humanitarian crisis generated by a decade of war,” he said.
The United States and the United Kingdom have repeatedly bombed Huthi missile launch sites in Yemen to eliminate weapons targeting commercial shipping.
The attack by the Islamist group Hamas on Israel on October 7 caused the deaths of around 1,200 people, most of them civilians, according to Israeli authorities.
In retaliation, Israel promised to annihilate Hamas and its military operations in the Gaza Strip have already caused the deaths of more than 30,000 people, the vast majority of these women and children, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health.
