“NWe have no moral right to stop the war as long as there are hostages in Gaza,” said Yoav Gallant, in Washington, after the United Nations Security Council voted in favor of an “immediate ceasefire” during Ramadan.
Noting that he would convey this message to the White House National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, the Israeli minister also guaranteed action “against Hamas everywhere”. “Including places where we have not yet been,” Gallant added, without mentioning the Rafah enclave, where more than a million people are taking refuge.
The minister also plans to meet with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.
The Israeli Ministry of Defense released these statements after the UN Security Council approved for the first time a resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The approval, after four failed attempts in recent months, was made possible thanks to the abstention of the United States, a decision that has already led Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cancel the visit to Washington of two of his main advisors.
The advisers were due to travel to the US at the request of the White House to hear US proposals to extend humanitarian aid to Gaza and alternatives to a ground operation in Rafah, one of the main points of friction between Washington and Israel.
Since the start of the war, the Council has only managed to pass two resolutions and neither of them concerned a ceasefire, but rather the humanitarian issue.
However, the results are scarce: aid to Gaza continues to be largely insufficient and famine is imminent in the enclave, at a time when more than 32,000 people have died in the territory controlled by Hamas since 2007.
The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas was triggered by an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist group on Israeli soil, on October 7, 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths and more than two hundred hostages, according to Israeli authorities.
