Nthe first six months of 2023, 96,755 babies were born in Ukraine. A value 28% lower than the 135,079 babies born in the country during the first six months of 2021.
Admittedly, the birth rate in Ukraine has been falling over the past decade, but this is the biggest break since 1991, the year in which Ukraine became independent from the former USSR. According to the BBC, citing data from the United Nations, about six million people have fled the country since the start of the invasionin February 2022, and Ukraine has a population of over 43 million people.
More, if, before the war, they were born in Ukraine, on average, up to 23,000 babies every weekthat number was reduced to about 16 thousand nowadays.
The last time Ukraine saw a sharp drop in the birth rate was precisely em 2014after the Russian annexation of the territory of Crimea. Next year, 12% fewer babies were born in the country.
Russia began, on February 24, 2022, a large-scale invasion of Ukraine, triggering an armed conflict that has already killed about 7,300 civilians. The Kremlin justifies what it calls a ‘special military operation’ with the need to “denazify” the Ukrainian regime.
