“DFrom a military point of view, Hamas is defeated. Their fighters have been eliminated or are in hiding”, said Gantz, after six months of the war in the Palestinian enclave, noting that the capabilities of the Palestinian militia are “weakened”, but that total victory will come “step by step”.
On this point, Gantz stressed that Israel “will not stop” and that its troops will finally enter the city of Rafah (south), considered the last bastion of Hamas, but which is also home to more than a million Palestinians displaced in the context of war.
“We will enter Rafah. We will return to Khan Yunis and operate in Gaza. Wherever there are terrorist targets, the IDF [Forças de Defesa de Israel] will be there”, stressed the member of the war cabinet, according to The Times of Israel.
Despite claiming a military victory over Hamas, Gantz stressed that the total defeat of the Palestinian militia will take longer and predicted that Israelis who are in school today will fight the militia in the future.
“Fighting Hamas will take time. Young people who are now in high school will continue to fight in the Gaza Strip, as well as in Judea and Samaria [Cisjordânia] and against Lebanon,” Gantz said.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas was triggered by an attack carried out in October last year by the Palestinian Islamist movement.
That day, 1,140 people were killed, most of them civilians, and around 240 people were kidnapped, a large proportion of whom remain in the Gaza Strip.
In retaliation, Israel, which promised to destroy the Palestinian Islamist movement, has been bombing the Gaza Strip, where, according to the local government led by Hamas, more than 30,000 people have already been killed, most of them civilians.
The Israeli offensive has also destroyed most of Gaza’s infrastructure and close to two million people have been forced to leave their homes, almost all of the 2.3 million inhabitants of the enclave, controlled by Hamas since 2007.
The population of the Gaza Strip is also facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, due to the collapse of hospitals, the outbreak of epidemics and shortages of drinking water, food, medicine and electricity.
