Tragedy in Porto Alegre, Brazil: at least 10 people died during a fire in a pension

At least 10 people died and eight others were injured as a result of a fire that destroyed a pension in the center of the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre this Friday.the southernmost capital of Brazil, firefighters reported.

The rescue forces were still searching for missing people early today, but did not report how many, since the establishment, which offered shelter to vulnerable people sleeping on the streetss, he did not have a record of his guests.

The large fire, whose causes are unknown for now, completely destroyed the three floors of the establishment, which functioned as an inn and boarding house irregularly, since it did not have licenses, a safety plan, or authorization from the firefighters.

According to the Fire Department of Rio Grande do Sul, a state in southern Brazil bordering Argentina and Uruguay, the ten charred bodies were found during the inspection by rescue teams after they controlled the flames.

Two of the victims were found on the first floor of the boarding house, another five on the second and the remaining three on the third.

Firefighters rescued eleven people alive, of which eight had to be taken to hospitals because they suffered burns of different degrees.

According to the Municipal Health Secretariat of Porto Alegre, the condition of two of the injured is serious, as well as the situation of a third who suffered burns on 20% of his body.

In a message on his social networks, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, lamented a tragedy that “deeply dismays.”
