EIn a statement, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that fighting between the Sudanese army and allied armed movements against the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) ) resumed on May 10 in Al-Fasher, causing at least 27 deaths, 130 injuries and around a thousand new displacements.
These clashes, which lasted throughout the day, involved “air strikes and heavy weapons” and extended to the city center and the main market, as well as different residential neighborhoods.
According to information received by OCHA, most of the displaced fled from the east and northwest of Al-Fasher to the southern areas of the city, noting that “although the fighting has stopped, there is concern that it could resume soon.” .
This follows a wave of more than 40,000 displaced people inside Al-Fasher in early April, when “tribal conflict” broke out amid clashes between the RSF and the army in different parts of North Darfur. .
OCHA recalled that violence has “severely” limited access for humanitarian aid to Al-Fasher and that, so far, in 2024, only 39 trucks have had access through cross-border crossing points such as Tine, which connects Darfur to Chad, and where vehicles carrying 1,500 tons of non-food goods have been waiting for weeks for the necessary approvals to cross.
“Even before these latest developments, more than a year of conflict and persistent obstacles to access that impede the sustained delivery of aid and other commodities have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, where 9 million people in need live,” OCHA highlighted. .
Al-Fasher is the only capital of the five Darfur states that is not controlled by the RSF, but the paramilitary offensive to seize this strategic location threatens more than 1.5 million people, including around 800,000 displaced people, according to the UN.
