Greek coastguard rescues about a hundred migrants

A The coast guard said all the people on board, estimated to be more than 70, were transferred to a patrol boat in international waters, southwest of the Peloponnese region, and taken to the port of Katakolo.

The situation occurred near the site of the mid-June tragedy that left hundreds of migrants dead or missing, after the vessel they were traveling on sank.

Then, Greece was heavily criticized for failing to save migrants before the sinking.

International waters southwest of Greece are a route used to transport people in overcrowded vessels from Turkey to Italy.

Longer and more dangerous than the short crossing across the Greek Aegean Sea, this route is chosen to seek to avoid Greek coastguard patrols.

Also today, the Greek coastguard rescued another 22 migrants near the island of Rhodes in the Aegean Sea.

There has been an increase in migrant arrivals to Greece from Turkey, mostly via sea, in recent weeks, thanks to more favorable sailing conditions.
