In recent days, Spain has once again faced the effects of an Isolated High Level Depression (DANA), a meteorological phenomenon also known as “cold drop”. This event has caused heavy rains, floods and alerts in several regions of the country, generating concern among the population and authorities.

A DANA is a mass of cold air that breaks off from the jet stream and descends to lower levels of the atmosphere, where it encounters warmer, more humid air. This interaction causes atmospheric instability, leading to intense rainfall and severe storms.

In Spain, DANAs are recurrent phenomena, especially in autumn, when atmospheric conditions are conducive to their formation.

What is known about the new DANA in Spain?

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued red and orange alerts in several provinces due to the arrival of this new DANA. The most affected regions include Málaga, Tarragona, Castellón, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. In Malaga, torrential rains have caused flooding with accumulations of up to 120 liters per square meter in some areas.

In Tarragona, the situation is equally serious, with rainfall that has reached 180 liters per square meter in 12 hours.

Given the seriousness of the situation, the authorities have activated emergency plans and have urged the population to take precautions. It is recommended to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone areas, and stay informed through the official channels of the AEMET and the emergency services.

Additionally, citizens have been advised to Avoid approaching rivers, boulevards and ravines, since their flow can increase quickly due to heavy rains.

This new DANA comes just two weeks after another similar storm affected Spain, leaving more than 200 dead and causing significant material damage. The recurrence of these extreme weather events underscores the need to improve preparedness and response to natural disasters.

Authorities are working to strengthen early warning systems and improve infrastructure to mitigate the effects of future DANAs.

Climate change is a key factor that is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of DANAs in Spain. Rising global temperatures are altering weather patterns, making these phenomena more common and severe. Furthermore, urbanization and deforestation are contributing to the vulnerability of affected regions, as they reduce the soil’s ability to absorb rainwater, increasing the risk of flooding.

Private traffic is restricted 24 hours in Valencia’s ground zero due to the new DANA

The Integrated Operational Coordination Center (Cecopi) of Valencia has agreed to restrict the mobility of private vehicles for 24 hours from six this afternoon in the twenty municipalities of zone zero of the floods of October 29, in the face of the “most serious severe” that the new dana may have in her.

This was announced by the general director of Forest Fire Prevention and spokesperson for Cecopi, Rosa Touris, after the meeting on November 13 attended by the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón.

Valencia maintains educational activity suspended in all schools in the city and its districts – Castellar-l’Oliveral, La Torre and Forn d’Alcedo – tomorrow Thursday due to the weather alert, the recommendations and the established restrictions.
