Puerto Rican reggaeton singers Anuel AA and Justin Quiles participated this Friday, August 30, in a rally for former United States President and Republican candidate for the White House, Donald Trump (2017-2021), in Pennsylvania.
The two artists met Trump at the airport in Johnstown, the town where the rally was scheduled, and greeted each other with a handshake and a brief exchange of words on the tarmac.
The candidate then posed with both for photographs in which they wore the characteristic red cap with the message ‘Make America Great Again’ and also a white version with the message ‘Make Puerto Rico Great Again’.
‘Make America Great Again’, a phrase popularized by the acronym MAGA, is the campaign slogan of the New York tycoon and identifies his most staunch supporters.
The reggaeton singers finished positioning themselves during the rally, in which they intervened.
This is what Anuel AA said about Trump
“We all know it. The world knows it. Everyone has experienced it. The best president the world has ever seen, that the country has ever seen. His name is President Trump.“, said Anuel AA.
“I spoke to him personally. He wants to help Puerto Rico grow and succeed as a country. So let’s stand strong and united. We must all remember that all he wants is to continue helping Latinos in the United States.“, he added.
He also said that Puerto Rico “has been through a lot” since Trump became president and criticized the current president, Democrat Joe Biden, because in his opinion “he promised and promised.”
Justin Quiles said: “I support you because I feel you are the most honest president we have ever had. It’s true, you say things as they are, not what you think people want to hear. And that is very important.”
The reggaeton singer, born in Connecticut but raised on the island, also shared a photo on his social media wearing a white cap with Trump’s signature on the visor.
Anuel AA is criticized
On social media, they questioned the reggaeton singer with comments like: “It’s laughable to see Anuel AA supposedly worried about Puerto Rico and supporting the coup plotter Trump when he spent time in the Dominican Republic behind Yailin. If there has been a US president who treated Puerto Rico with more contempt, it has been him. By the way, Anuel AA cannot vote for president of the US”; “#Anuel says that #Trump is the best president for the US and that he helped Puerto Rico and Latinos. Is it shamelessness or Alzheimer’s? Did you forget how Trump threw toilet paper at Puerto Ricans after Hurricane Maria and his anti-immigrant campaign? Sawdust is what he has in his head.”
During his term, Trump had to deal with the consequences of the devastating Hurricane Maria that hit Puerto Rico, which left hundreds dead and parts of the island without water or electricity for months.
His reaction sparked controversy from the moment he visited the island in 2017, when he said that the disaster was not “a real catastrophe”, as Katrina was in Louisiana in 2005.
In September 2018, the president sparked another heated controversy by denying that Hurricane Maria had caused nearly 3,000 deaths, as indicated by an academic report backed by Puerto Rican authorities, and by accusing Democrats without evidence of manipulating that figure to make him look bad.
