Fort rains have hit the city of Katesh, in northern Tanzania, since Saturday, causing landslides that destroyed homes.

“The number rose to 47 dead and 85 injured,” Manyara regional commissioner, Queen Sendinga, told local journalists, giving an update on a previous toll of 20 fatalities.

The most affected area is Mount Hanang, where reinforcements of security forces have already been sent by order of the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu, according to the British public broadcaster BBC.

The water caused significant damage to infrastructure and homes in Manyara province, where Hanang is located, according to local newspaper The Citizen.

Authorities warned that damage assessment has not yet been completed and continue to prioritize rescue operations.

Every year, floods affect tens of thousands of people in Tanzania.
