“AND “It’s funny because we never make good deals, on anything, much less when it comes to hostage exchanges. Our negotiators are always an embarrassment to us,” the New York magnate stressed in a message on his social network, Truth Social.

Trump demanded that the Biden-led administration “disclose the details” of the prisoner swap, such as the number of people handed over to Russia and whether money was paid to Moscow for the exchange.

The White House detailed that 16 prisoners were released from Russia and, in exchange, eight prisoners were released from the United States, Germany, Slovenia, Norway and Poland.

According to US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, the agreement did not involve any payment or the lifting of any sanctions.

Among the three Americans released today is The Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich, detained in Russia in 2023 and convicted of espionage.

Trump had recently declared that Russian President Vladimir Putin would release Gershkovich immediately after the US election on November 5, but only if the Republican were the winner.

During a statement at the White House, Biden repeatedly stated that the prisoner exchange, which he described as a “milestone of diplomacy and friendship between countries”, is a demonstration that the United States must have strong allies, in a message directed at Trump, who has been very critical of NATO.

A prisoner exchange operation between Russia and several Western countries has allowed the release of 26 people.

The exchange is already considered the largest between Moscow and Western capitals in the post-Soviet era.
