Marianne Edgar Buddebishop of the Washington National Cathedral – the first woman to lead the Episcopal Diocese of Washington -, begged Donald Trump this Tuesday to have “mercy” for LGBTIQ people and migrants in an irregular situation in the United States . He did so during a service in the Washington Cathedral that closed the inauguration of the new president.

Trump reacted during the ceremony and frowned when the bishop advocated from the pulpit for LBGTIQ people and migrants in an irregular situation, two groups that the Republican president targeted with presidential decrees just a few hours before taking office.

The Republican attended the traditional presidential service to commemorate his inauguration and did not expect the criticism. “I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President.”said the bishop, who spoke of the “fear” that, according to her, is felt throughout the country.

“There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families,” he said. “The people who pick up our farms and clean our office buildings, who work in poultry farms and meat-packing plants, who wash dishes after eating in restaurants and work night shifts in hospitals (… ) may not be citizens or may not have the proper documentation,” he said.

“But the vast majority of migrants are not criminals,” he added.

Trump, sitting on the bench in the front row, looked at Budde very seriously. Her family and Vice President JD Vance seemed equally surprised and disgusted by the bishop’s intervention.

Asked later by a journalist about his reaction during the ceremony, Trump simply said that the service “wasn’t too exciting.” “They could do much better,” he said.

Trump attended that ceremony with the first lady, Melania Trump. From the front row, both listened in silence and with a solemn gesture to the prayers, the organ melodies and the songs, including an ‘Ave Maria’. At his side were Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha.

This type of service has been a tradition since 1993, when the new president attends a prayer ceremony the morning after his inauguration.

Less than two weeks ago, Trump was in that same cathedral for the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981), where he was seen chatting animatedly with Barack Obama (2009-2017). At that event, Trump sat in the second row, while the first was reserved for the then president, Joe Biden.

It must be said that among the dozens of executive orders signed late this Monday there are measures to suspend the arrival of asylum seekers and expel migrants who are in the country illegally.

Trump also decreed that only two sexes will be recognized: male and female, in what organizations consider a direct attack on people with trans and non-binary life experience.
