Forensic investigators from the University of Granada (southern Spain), led by Professor of Legal Medicine José Antonio Lorente, confirmed this Thursday, definitively, that the bones of Christopher Columbus buried in the Cathedral of Seville (southern Spain) indeed belong to the navigator.

This was communicated by Lorente during the presentation of the documentary that RTVE will broadcast this Saturday, October 12, the day that commemorates the arrival of Columbus to American lands, although the other enigma remains unrevealed, which is the origin of the admiral.

According to Lorente, in the 2003, 2004 and 2005 studies there was talk of a “possible compatibility” that these bones were from Columbus, although it was a low probability, because there was not enough DNA.

“Today it has been possible to verify it with new technologies, so that previous partial theory that the remains of Seville are those of Christopher Columbus is definitively confirmed”he pointed out.

Different laboratories support that these bones were from Columbus

Lorente explained that the data is “exact”, so the reliability from the point of view of the genetic data is “practically absolute” and has been replicated by different laboratories.

He announced that the research will be published in an international scientific journal, which is what researchers do when they have a result that they want to share.

Regarding the question of Columbus’s nationality, Lorente did not give an answer. The enigma is expected to be resolved in the documentary that airs on Saturday the 12th.

The investigation headed by Lorente tries to shed light on the origin of the navigator, around which several theories circulate, although the most widespread and internationally accepted is that he was from Genoa (Italy).

This work, as explained at the time by the professor of Forensic Medicine and director of the project, includes DNA analysis of the skeletal remains available from Christopher Columbus, his son Hernando and his brother Diego.
