The Hecht Museum is located in Haifa, a city in northern Israel, on the grounds of the University of Haifa, and collects archaeology and art items. According to the museum’s administrators, the incident was an accident and the boy, who is between 4 and 5 years old and was on an expedition with his family, was distracted and accidentally tripped over the artifact.

The vase was on display near the museum’s entrance, without protective glass, as the institution believes that displaying archaeological finds “unobstructed” has a “special charm.”

What will the penalty be?

The museum officials said that “there are cases where exhibits are intentionally damaged and such cases are dealt with very severely, even involving the police.”

However, the museum notes that “in this case this was not the case. The vase was accidentally damaged by a small child visiting the museum and the response will be appropriate.”

Restoration of the historical element

The museum has hired an archaeological conservation specialist to restore the vase, but adds that it will continue to display the items without any restrictions so as not to take away the “magic” of the object.

Where does the vase come from?

According to experts, the vase was most likely used in ancient times to transport products such as wine and olive oil; it predates the era of the biblical kings David and Solomon and is typical of the Canaan region on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean.

Similar pottery pieces found during archaeological excavations are often fragmented or incomplete when discovered, which led to the artifact being hailed as “an impressive discovery.”
